University Description
Founded in 1938 and located in Changsha, a famous historical and cultural city, Hunan Normal University (HNNU) was admitted into the ‘211 Project’ and is listed as a National ‘Double First Rate’ University and as a ‘Double First Rate’ University emphatically constructed jointly by China’s Ministry of Education (MoE) and Hunan Provincial Government. It was graded A in the assessment of undergraduate teaching conducted by MoE. With 8 campuses, it covers a total area of 193 hectares.
HNNU has a full-time faculty members of more than 2100. Among them, 3 are academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 3 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 2 academician of the European Academy of Sciences, and 5 members of the Discipline Assessment Group under the State Council. Currently, it has a population of on-campus students as large as 40,000, of whom over 12,000 are postgraduate students and 1,200 are long-term or short-term international students.
HNNU consists of 24 schools and runs altogether 89 undergraduate disciplines, which fall into such 11 main categories as philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, technology, medicine, management and art. It boasts 6 National Key Disciplines, 5 National First-Class Disciplines. Chemistry, Clinical Medicine, Engineering and Material Science on the top list worldwide. 21 of its first-level disciplines offer Ph.D and Ed.D programs, 34 of its first-level disciplines offering masters’ programs and there are 24 professional masters’ programs. Besides, it possesses 20 research stations for post-doctors.
HNNU has set up partnerships with 198 universities and institutions in 47 countries and regions to push forward student and staff exchanges, and cooperation in teaching and scientific research. It has co-established 3 Confucius Institutes with 3 universities in the U.S., Russia and South Korea respectively [Note: Southern Utah University, Kazan Federal University and Wonkwang University)], and has 6 Chinese-Foreign Cooperation in Running Schools Programs with 6 universities in the U.S., the U. K., Russia, the German and Macau [Note: Delaware University (Teaching English as a Second Language), St. Joseph University (Preschool Education), University of Central Lancashire (Physical Education), M.I. Glinka Nizhny Novgorod State Conservatory (Music Performance), Mediadesign University of Applied Sciences (Art Design) and Kiang Wu Nursing College (Nursing)]. Recently, 5 majors of Foreign Language and Literature, Chemistry, Biology, Physics and Physical Education have been approved by the Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC) for International Cooperative Training Program for Innovative Talents.
Since HNNU establishment, it has provided country with over 500,000 graduates, many of whom are international students or Chinese students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. Its alumni are all over the world.
