University Description

Nantong University was founded in 1912 as a private Nantong Medical College and Nantong Textile College founded by Mr. Zhang Jian, a famous industrialist and educator in modern times. The university is a comprehensive university jointly built by the People’s Government of Jiangsu Province and the Ministry of Transport, and a university under the Jiangsu High-level University Construction Summit Plan. The university is ranked 106th in the 2022 China University Evaluation by the China Academy of Management Sciences, 114th in the ESI China University Ranking and 33rd in the 2020 Soft Science China University Ranking for Outstanding Medical Alumni.

For more than a century, the university has adhered to the spirit of the school motto “Pray for the East and the West, strive for excellence”, the philosophy of “learning must be expected to be used, and use must be suitable for the earth”, the value of “moral beauty, academic purity “Since the resumption of the college entrance examination in 1977, a total of three undergraduate graduates have been elected as academicians of the two academies, ranking 35th in the country.

The university has 20 colleges, one independent college (Xinglin College), one large comprehensive tertiary hospital directly under the university (Nantong University Hospital) and colleges of international education and continuing education. It has three post-doctoral stations in basic medicine, clinical medicine and information and communication engineering, five first-degree doctoral programs in basic medicine, clinical medicine, information and communication engineering, public health and preventive medicine and special medicine, 23 first-degree master’s programs and 19 professional master’s degree programs. Eight disciplines, including clinical medicine, neuroscience and behavior, engineering, pharmacology and toxicology, biology and biochemistry, chemistry and material science, have been ranked in the top 1% of ESI disciplines worldwide. The university has two advantageous disciplines in Jiangsu universities, eight key disciplines in Jiangsu Province and 30 key specialties in clinical medicine in Jiangsu Province.

The university has 3,315 teaching staff (including Xinglin College), including 1,740 with senior titles and more than 1,860 doctoral and master’s degree supervisors. The university has 104 undergraduate majors (77 majors to be enrolled in 2021), covering 10 disciplines, including literature, science, engineering, medicine, art, economics, law, education, history and management. The University has more than 40,000 full-time undergraduate students (including Xinglin College), 4,363 full-time postgraduate students, and 1008 international students, and passed the undergraduate teaching assessment by the Ministry of Education in 2007 and the audit assessment by the Ministry of Education in 2017.
