University Description
Jilin University is a national key comprehensive university under the direct administration of Ministry of Education in China. Located in Changchun, Jilin Province, the university was founded in 1946. In 1960, it was listed as a national key university. In 1984, it was one of the 22 universities initially granted the permission to admit postgraduates. In 1995, it became one of the first “Project 211” universities, as determined by the State Education Commission of China. In 2001, Jilin University was listed as one of the “Project 985” key construction universities. In 2004, it became one of the universities under the direct administration of the Ministry of Education of China. In 2017, it was rated as one of the universities for building world-class universities in the “Double World-class Initiative”.
In 2000, Jilin University merged with the former Jilin University of Technology, the former Norman Bethune University of Medical Sciences, the former Changchun University of Science and Technology, and the former Changchun Institute of Posts and Telecommunications. In 2004, the former University of Military Logistics also joined.
Jilin University offers a wide range of disciplines, within 52 colleges or schools, covering 12 academic categories, namely: philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, agriculture, medical science, management, and art. Among them, archaeology, mathematics, physics, chemistry, materials science and engineering, philosophy, law, mechanical and bionic engineering, electronic science and technology, geological resources and engineering, and one health are selected as “Double First-class” constructing disciplines according to the list released by Ministry of Education. JLU has 141 bachelor degree programs, 63 master degree programs, 49 doctoral degree programs, and 2 interdisciplinary doctoral programs. It also has 44 post-doctoral research stations.18 disciplines rank in the top 1% of the ESI. Two of these disciplines are in the top 1‰.
Jilin University boasts outstanding faculties. There are 6,439 faculty members in total, among which there are 2,320 professors. There are 11 members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences or the Chinese Academy of Engineering (including 54 adjunct members), 7 senior professors of philosophical and social sciences, 15 members of the assessment group of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, 49 faculty members in the “10,000 Talents Project”, 8 national-level outstanding teachers, 5 chief experts in research and construction projects of the Marxism theory in the central government, 6 chief scientists in the national “Project 973”, 15 young and middle-aged experts with prominent contributions, 34 experts in the National “Hundred-Thousand-Ten Thousand Project”, 37 winners of the “National Outstanding Youth Fund”, 42 winners of the “National Excellent Youth Fund”, and 89 faculty members selected as “Changbai Mountain Scholars” in Jilin Province.
Our university is now home to five state key laboratories, 1 national engineering laboratory, 6 national-local joint laboratories, 1 national engineering and technology research center, 1 national animal experimental center, 4 international science and technology cooperation bases, 6 humanities and social science key research bases of the Ministry of Education, 12 key laboratories of the Ministry of Education, 5 engineering research centers of the Ministry of Education, 1 joint laboratory of international cooperation of the Ministry of Education, 2 joint collaborative innovation centers, 1 field science observation station of the Ministry of Education, and 19 key laboratories of other ministries of China. Jilin University has undertaken a great number of research projects at both the national and the provincial level, generating considerable scientific achievements with good prospects for industrialization and high technical content.
We have established a high-level talent training system for the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees. There are 72,830 full-time students, including 8,496 doctoral and 20,774 postgraduate students, 41,955 undergraduate students, and 1,605 overseas students.
